Laboratory & Field Studies on Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) Using Different Additives and Binders

Present Status & Progress

Methodology of laboratory study on SMA was reported earlier during 2003-04. For construction of demonstration stretch, a site is to be identified with heavy traffic. Laboratory study and literature survey indicated that SMA mix can be used as high durability wearing course of heavily trafficked roads. Laboratory study indicated that good stone on stone contact using Topcell as additive provide a good SMA mix using different modified binders viz NRMB-40, CRMB-60, and PMB-40 (SBS based). Best results are reported to be achieved with 0.3% Topcell and PMB-40 (SBS based). For demonstration of technology, it is proposed to undertake a field study on Asha Ram Tyagi Marg under jurisdiction of PWD, Govt. of Delhi. In Eastern part of Delhi this road is subjected to heavy traffic.
