Development of Materials for Special Road Applications (Noise Absorbing Porous Bituminous Concrete)

Scope and Objectives
(i) Study of noise absorbing characteristics of different type of road surfacings.
(ii) Development of binders for noise absorbing porous bituminous concrete.
(iii) Design of porous bituminous concrete using different binders.
(iv) Preparation of State – of - Art Report on Noise Absorbing Surfacings.
(v) Study voids-permeability-noise absorption coefficient relationship.

Methodology

(i) Literature Survey
(ii) Design of mixes with different voids (16-24%)
(iii) Water permeability studies.
(iv) Texture depth studies by sand patch method.
(v) Skid Resistance studies.
(vi) Measurement of noise absorption coefficient of different mixes.
(vii) Development of specifications for noise absorbing porous bituminous concrete surfacings.
(viii) Data Analysis & Report Preparation.

Conclusions

(i) Binders with value of G* / Sin δ as 1.0 k Pa at 76 ˚C eliminate use of additive and become highly resistant to deformation in     porous bituminous concrete.
(ii) Designed mixes with 16% voids using developed binders are highly resistant to deformation.
(iii) Porous bituminous concrete mixes can be used for roads near hospitals, schools and residential areas for abatement of noise      pollution.
