Study of Landslide and Rockfall on Mumbai - Pune Expressway

Date of Start: December 2004
Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi (R)

Present Status and Progress
The Mumbai-Pune expressway has been experiencing the problem of rockfall and subsidences at a few locations, which affects the traffic during monsoon. CRRI investigated the expressway and identified 16 critical locations which need immediate attention. Detailed investigations have been carried out for three locations. Draft report on the investigations and recommendation for suitable remedial measures was submitted to the MSRDC in March 2005.

Findings / Conclusions
Mumbai-Pune Expressway passes through the hilly track of basaltic rocks. The area comes under high intensity rainfall due to which recurrence of the rock fall is very frequent. The frequent incidences of rock fall causes disruption of traffic, property loss and loss of life. It is proposed to monitor the efficacy of remedial measures.

Detailed mapping in appropriate scale of the slide areas followed by core sampling for getting the realistic slope profile as well as rock quality data is needed for design of most appropriate remedial measures.

Implementation of the recommended remedial measures and monitoring for three years.
