Estimation of Fuel Loss during Idling of Vehicles at Signalized Intersections

Date of Start:April 2004
Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi (R, I)

Findings/Conclusion
Congestion on roads has been increasing due to a very rapid growth in the use of personalized vehicles leading to high consumption of fossil fuels. The number of signalized intersections have increased manifolds resulting in wastage of fuel during idling. It has been proposed to estimate the loss of fossil fuels during the idling at the intersections with and without flyovers.

12 representative intersections of varying traffic volume have been selected and classified traffic volume counts, stopped delay survey have been conducted to ascertain the fuel loss during idling of vehicles at signalized intersection. Analysis and report writing is in progress.
