Analysis of Congested Signalized Intersection for Mixed Traffic

Scope and Objective
(i) To test the applicability of different modes at different intersections
(ii) To compare the field delay with delay which do obtain from different models
(iii) To improve level of service of the intersection by applying following two alternatives.

Alt-I: optimization of signal timing for minimum delay criteria
Alt-II: changed phase plan with signal optimization timings for minimum delay criteria

Methodology
In the present study video camera technique was used to measure the classified directions traffic volume on each approach of the intersections. Also the geometric details and signal timings of the intersections are noted.
After calculating PCU, average delay, saturation flow and capacity a comparison of field delay with four theoretical models of delays (Webster’s HCM 2000, Alcek’s & Transyt) were made and best delay model was selected. Further to improve LOS and to minimize delay, two alternatives are selected and best among them is recommended.

Findings and Conclusions

The study suggests that mixed traffic is not a big problem but mixed movement is the main factor that affects the saturation flow. The approach delay obtained by HCM 2000 is closer to field delay in over saturation as well as under saturation condition. Webster’s model is very close to field delay only in case of under saturation flow. After optimization of cycle time, it is observed that delay is considerably decreased from the existing delay. If variations of delay between Alt-I & Alt-II are very less, Alt-I is the best measure considering the cost factor.
