Potentiality of Coir for Road Construction

Scope and Objective
The most common reason of pavement failure is the presence of weak subgrade. The use of coir geotextile in soil subgrade can improve the properties of soil. Since coir is a naturally available material, its use in pavement construction can economise the construction cost.
(i) To provide the coir geotextile as separator between base course and subgrade.
(ii) To provide coir as separator between base course and subgrade.
(iii) To find the reduction in base thickness when coir geotextile is used.
(iv) To compare the behaviour of non woven and woven coir geotextile.

Methodology
(i) CBR method- conducted with and without coir geotextile in three different types of soil.
(ii) Plate load test- conducted in a soil aggregate system with and without coir geotextile.

Findings and Conclusions

(i) When coir geotexile is used as reinforcement, the CBR value of the soil has been increased to the extent of 2%.
(ii) Non woven coir geotextile is showing better result that woven geotextile in CBR test.
