Studies on Effect of Ageing on Bitumen

Date of Start:January 2005
College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (R, I)

Scope and Objective
The primary objective of this study is to determine the change of basic properties of bitumen such as penetration, ductility, softening point and viscosity on different time span after laying.

Methodology
(i) Collection of samples from the pavement of different ages by core cutting
(ii) Determination of the volume, density, binder content and air voids of the samples
(iii) Extracting the samples with solvent trichloro ethylene. The extracted solution was allowed to evaporate to recover the      bitumen from the solution
(iv) Basic tests were conducted on recovered sample
(v) Developed a model to predict the change of basic properties of bitumen at different ageing periods.

Findings and Conclusions

By conducting basic tests on the recovered bitumen, one can analyse the change in property due to ageing and by modelling, it will be possible to suggest remedial measures to maintain the property of binder within specified limit.
