Analysis of Productivity in an Inland Container Depot: A case study of Inland Container Depot, Tughlakabad, Delhi

Scope and Objectives
(i) To study containerization trends in India and identify issues relating to its growth
(ii) To review global literature on container handling facilities and identify best practices
(iii) To assess the operational characteristics of a case study of the container depot at Tughlakabad and identify issues relating      to its productivity and efficiency.
(iv) To propose norms and policy guidelines for dry ports.

Methodology
In the literature there are no direct methods outlined for assessing the productivity of an ICD. On the basis of literature the few indicators are set up to assess the productivity. The different types of characteristics of study area are collected. The facilities & infrastructure details along with capacity details are gathered. Data related to physical & documentation related activities are also analyzed to comment on efficiency.

Findings and Conclusions

(i) The dwell time of container is of 10 days which is more than international benchmark of 6 days
(ii) Available equipments have been utilized optimally, but the available equipments are inadequate to handle the volume of      traffic.
(iii) Area of the terminal can be further utilized efficiently provided the empty container stacks completely out of the terminal      premises to the nearby external empty container yards.
(iv) Smart card based technology at entry/ exit gates can enhance the efficiency further.
(v) The process of documentation can be streamlined through better coordination between the various players involved in the      process of export and import of containerized cargo.
