Modeling and Simulation of Pedestrian Flows

Scope and Objective
To see if theoretical models of pedestrian movements can be developed which can replicate observed pedestrian behavior --- individually or as a group.

Methodology
Differential equations are developed to model pedestrian motion. These equations are developed from a social force viewpoint of the system. Simulations are done using these models to study how realistic these descriptions are. The results are promising. This is a completely theoretical study with independent verification using observations.

Findings and Conclusions
Theoretically sound models of pedestrian movement which can describe observed behaviour in different situations are developed.
