Application of Genetic Algorithm for Estimating Origin Destination Matrix from Link Volume Counts

Scope and Objective
(i) To study the applicability of Genetic Algorithm for estimating OD matrix from link volume count.
(ii) To develop a program using GA toolbox in MATLAB for the above.
(iii) To assign trip to selected links using all or nothing assignment.
(iv) To adopt most appropriate link selection procedure.
(v) To develop software program in FORTRAN for estimation of OD matrix.
(vi) To apply the methodology in a hypothetical network (vii) To find OD for a real network

Methodology
(i) A program in MATLAB will be developed to find the applicability of genetic algorithm for estimation of origin destination     matrix.
(ii) This program is tested in a hypothetical network
(iii) Shortest path from all zones to other zones are found out using shortest path algorithm.
(iv) This is used to assign trips to various links.
(v) Suitable genetic operators will be selected
(vi) A software program in FORTRAN will be developed for the estimation of OD matrix for a hypothetical network.
(vii) If the programme is found suitable it will be applied for real network

Findings and Conclusions
(i) A program in MATLAB using GA toolbox was developed to apply the algorithm on the hypothetical network.
(ii) The program was run for fifty iterations and it was found that the objective function value decrease with no of iterations. (iii) The Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) between estimated and actual link volumes was calculated and was found to       decrease with no. of iterations.
