Improvement of Traffic Demand via Vidyasagar Setu

Scope and Objective
To estimate the likely impact on traffic demand via Vidyasagar setu, Kolkata, with an improved road connectivity between Howrah station and Vidyasagar Setu, development of facilities near Santragachi station, development of Shalimar as terminal station etc.
(i) To measure the present traffic on Vidyasagar Setu, and its O-D (origin destination ) distribution
(ii) To estimate the demand once the facilities to increase the traffic level on Vidyasagar setu are being implemented
(iii) To check for the rationality of toll charge on different categories of vehicles

Methodology
Volume count and O-D at Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Station area; Estimation of shift using Logit model for private vehicle and taxi users; Checking the rationality of present toll rates for private vehicle, taxi and commercial vehicles on the basis of generalized cost or vehicle operating cost; Study the toll sensitivity using generalized cost models and utility models; Forecast traffic volumes via Vidyasagar Setu for different development scenarios using logit model.

Findings and Conclusions
Using the proposed methodology, it was possible to estimate the traffic volumes via Vidyasagar setu for different development scenarios. The additional measures and improvement in road network required to improve the traffic level via Vidyasagar setu is formulated. Though all the improvement measures are likely to increase the traffic level via Vidyasagar Setu, it is found necessary to formulate suitable measures and encourage public transport users to use the routes via Vidyasagar setu.
