Development of GIS-Based Traffic Accident Information System

Scope and Objective
Road accidents are increasing enormously causing lot of economic loss to the country. Road accidents are not randomly distributed along the road network and due to the different road features and traffic conditions, accidents have a tendency to concentrate at certain locations. These locations are called as Hazardous Locations. The objectives of this study are
(i) Identify the Hazardous locations on Roads commonly termed as Accident Black Spots along National Highways and State     Highways in T.N.
(ii) Create an integrated traffic accident database system with Geo-referencing of accident occurrences
(iii) Locate the Accident Black Spots on digitized map

Methodology
Accident data has been collected from Institute of Road Transport. Accident Black Spots are identified based on Accident Density Method and these spots are located on digitized map. Arc View GIS 3.1 software package has been used in this project.

Findings and Conclusions
The total number of accident black spots in Trichy District on National Highways and State Highways is 49 of these 33 accident black spots are on National Highways and 16 accident black spots on State Highways. By maintaining proper GIS database, it is easier to shows the complete information of each location at the click of a mouse like what is the total number of accidents, fatal accidents, non fatal accidents, category of the road, road number, and km station of the accident prone area. Analysis of such data could provide information about locations where traffic operations are inefficient and where improvements are very much necessary. In this way we can prioritize the different locations.
