Road Safety Audit Review on NH – 67

Date of Start: July 2004
National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (R, S)

Scope and Objective
(i) To analyze the accident data collected from police stations
(ii) To identify the accident – prone areas based on accident data
(iii) To identify the potential safety problems and deficiencies
(iv) To arrive at an accident Possibility Index.

Methodology
Traffic volume and spot speeds have been conducted. Safety audit procedures are based on a series of checklists. Checklists were first developed and used in the United Kingdom and are an aid to conducting safety studies.

Findings and Conclusions
(i) All vehicles are traveling below design speed on NH-67, from spot speed data there is no over speeding on this stretch.
(ii) Accident possibility index is high and very high at many places.
(iii) Traffic signs are not maintained properly
(iv) Shoulder is not maintained throughout the stretch as suggested by IRC.
(v) Encroachment by the street traders at bus stands and commercial areas leads to accidents.
(vi) Road markings are not available in some stretches.
(vii) Buses are not stopping at the safe locations.
