C. TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION
Road Accident Modeling for Mixed Traffic Flow

Date of Start:August 2004
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (R, C)

Scope and Objective
(i) Develop scientific method for the identification of accident-prone locations
(ii) To study the effect of traffic, and roadway factors and their variation on accidents
(iii) To develop suitable accident prediction models, based on the roadway and traffic flow parameters

Methodology
It is proposed to carry out field studies covering different types of highway and collect accident data for a period of three years, Traffic flow data along with turning movements at intersections, road geometric data such as no of lanes, lane and shoulder width, no of access, no of intersections etc., and qualitative survey of the study stretches will be carried out.
Data manipulation and analysis will be done using statistical software and appropriate accident predication models will be developed.
