Evaluation of Influence of Lane Designation on Vehicular Emissions

Date of Start:January 2004
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (R, C)

Scope and Objective
(i) To evaluate the influence of lane designation in minimising vehicular emissions.
(ii) To study vehicular emission levels for different travel modes.
(iii) To evaluate the effect of lane designation in mitigating air pollution, through simulation models.

Methodology
This study is mainly intended to evaluate the effectiveness of lane designation in minimising vehicular emissions. This is proposed to be conducted first through a field study to understand the traffic and emission parameters under lane-designated conditions. For this purpose, a case study corridor has been identified in Chennai city. Following field data collection, a simulation program is to be built, incorporating both traffic and emission characteristics. This program will then be employed to test various scenarios of traffic when vehicles follow lanes and when they violate lane discipline. The simulation model will also yield vehicular emission values for various test cases. These results will be used to evaluate the influence of lane designation on vehicular emissions.
