Impact Assessment of Urban Traffic Control Measures Using Computer Simulation

Scope and Objective
The proposed research work aims to assess the impact of traffic control measures in relation to transit vehicles with specific reference to urban arterials. The selected traffic control measures for the study are:(i) Signal coordination, (ii) Priority for transit vehicles at traffic signals and (iii) Traffic Segregation at mid blocks. The objectives of the research are: (i) to study the roadway and traffic flow characteristics and identify the parameters to be considered for modeling mixed traffic flow on urban arterials, (ii) to model heterogeneous traffic flow on urban arterials using computer simulation, (iii) to apply model to study the impact of the imposed traffic control measures, and (iv) to develop guidelines for imposition of such control measures under Indian conditions.

Methodology
The proposed research work aims at development of a microscopic traffic simulation model to assess the impact of urban traffic control measures. The computer coding for the model will be written in C++ language. The developed model will be validated using field observed data, and the validated model will then be used to develop control measures for heterogeneous traffic on urban arterials.
