Evaluation of Share Auto in Chennai Urban Transport

Scope and Objective
(i) To determine the nature and type of services provided by share auto to the traveling public.
(ii) To determine the nature and characteristics of travel demand for these vehicles.
(iii) To find out the deficiencies in the existing bus transportation.
(iv) To find out the extent to which they complement or supplement the existing bus transportation system.

Methodology
(i) Operational characteristics and demand characteristics of share autos were determined by conducting primary questionnaire     survey.
(ii) Bus passenger opinion survey was conducted to determine the deficiencies in the bus transportation.
(iii) Secondary data was collected to find out the number of buses operated and passenger loading.

Findings and Conclusions
(i) There is a latent demand for the public transportation in the society however there is inadequacy of bus service and as a     result IPT modes have emerged.
(ii) From the survey it was found that people depend on share autos for time savings, comfort and safety.
(iii) It was found that 70% of the people are willing to shift to bus provided the bus service is improved.
(iv) The success of public transport depends on the efficient operational management looking to the need of customers by      increasing the frequency of buses.
