Use of Laterite Stone in WBM Construction

Present Status and Progress

The test track on Koumb - Kulthe – Fansawale Road, MDR-43 has been constructed from km 9/000 to 10/000 in May 2001. One-kilometer length has been taken for test track under the above research scheme. From km. 9/000 to 9/350 only black basalt stone metal chips were used for WBM construction from km. 9/350 to 9/700 black basalt and laterite stone metal chips were used in 50:50 proportion for WBM construction. From km. 9/700 to 10/000 laterite stone was used for WBM construction. Post construction observations for the test track were decided to be taken twice in the year i.e. before monsoon and after monsoon. Roughness Index and visual observations of the test track were taken. The test section is being monitored for past three years. The observations revealed that the test track is in good condition up till now.

Findings/Conclusions
The test track was constructed in May 2001. Post construction observations before and after monsoon have been taken for three years. It has been observed that the performance of the test track is good.

Limitations
Based on post construction observations, it can be fairly concluded that the performance of WBM using laterite and basalt aggregates has performed in a similar fashion. The three stretches of the test track i.e. 100% basalt stretch 50:50 % black basalt and laterite stretch and the 100 % laterite stretch, all are in good condition.
