Study on Optimum Axle Load of Commercial Vehicles for Indian Roads

Project has been completed and the report prepared.

Findings/Conclusions
Aim of the study has been to identify the scenario of the controlled and optimum axle weight assuming a seriously enforced regime of legal axle load limit, which will have minimum total transportation cost (TTC). A detailed evaluation of sensitivity of control parameters for validating deterioration pattern indicates the optimum value of axle load. The TTC predicted under different maintenance alternative scenarios, when plotted against the different axle loads, suggests 11 tonne as the optimum axle load (rear axle) for the prevailing road maintenance and renewal technologies.

Limitations
The proposed work revolves around the data base of only two studies. This may have some limitations of the findings. It will be appropriate to extend the study for a wider database.
