Study of Road Performance Constructed by Oversize Aggregates

Scope and Objectives
It is observed that the aggregates being supplied for the construction of roads are normally found to be oversized & are not in uniform shapes. Such characteristics have impact on the performance of roads, which need to be studied.


Methodology
It is proposed to conduct the project by following below mentioned steps:
(i) To collect aggregates from two specified queries.
(ii) Physical properties of the collected samples will be tested in the laboratory and compared with IRC specifications.
(iii) Density shall be evaluated before and after compaction in the laboratory.
(iv) To construct a trial reach of 500 mt, on experimental basis according to the MoSRTH specification, with 75 mm compacted      thickness of WBM III.
(v) First coat surface dressing with 16-22.4 mm stone grit and second coat surface dressing with10-16mm stone grit shall be      done as per MoSRTH specifications.
(vi) After WBM III, first coat painting and second coat painting, the roughness of the road stretch shall be evaluated.
(vii) Study of longitudinal/lateral unevenness, crack patterns, depression, ruts, edge distortion and uneven settlement shall be      made for a period of 3 years at an interval of 6 months.

The study will provide new factual position regarding the road performance constructed by using oversized aggregates

The proposal is in the initial stage and has been placed for approval.
